Song of the Day 26/12/2008

MGMT - Kids

Now, the end of any year wouldn't be complete without an, er, well, end of year best of list. And 2008 is no different. I'm not going to bang on about the quality of the year's releases in general, but it's clear that there are some bands who are right on top of their game at the moment. So my top 3 records of 2008 starts here.

First up was this effort from MGMT. Oracular Spectacular was originally released in digital format last year, but was then put out on shiny CD this year hence it being able to sneak on to this list. It's been a funny year for the Brooklyn boys - they sort of made it big without actually making it big at all. Everyone will know at least one of their songs - they have that ability to write catchy and commercial-sounding tunes, which means every TV producer in the land has at some point backed their ad/promo/montage with an MGMT track - but the album still only reached 12 in the UK charts. These days you don't have to shift many to get top ten, so you can only imagine everyone's just downloaded the one track without delving any further.

Anyway, this is probably the best song on the album, which inspired some fella to make his own, rather impressive, video. He's got the idea spot on: this song makes you wanna dance. So, turn up the speakers, pretend no one's watching, and throw some shapes...
