Song of the Day 25/12/2008

By jingle bells, it's Christmas! I hope you're sitting comfortably in your new reindeer jumper, or wearing Santa socks at least....

So what is it with Christmas tunes, hmm? It's normally around about the last week in November that we can expect to hear the sound of sleigh bells creep onto radio playlists, soon followed by Paul Young's familiar festive assurance, "There's no need to be afraid". Oh but there is, and feel very afraid we do, cos for the next 30 days at least there'll be songs about trees, mistletoe and snowmen lurking around every corner, just conspiring to drive us slowly insane. It's not that there's anything desperately wrong with much of what makes up your classic Christmas top 100, it's just that it really is Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas earlier and earlier every year. When even fairy tales from the Big Apple can't soothe us, we know it's gone too far.

But enough of this vaguely humbug-esque nonsense, for there do exist tunes which for reasons unknown have been spared the annual slaughter, have escaped over-exposure and have been allowed to live on in twinkly, albeit still cheesy*, jubilance. Believe in the magic: this rockin' tune from Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers is one of them.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Christmas Time All Over Again

* cheese in every form is an unequivocal yuletide requirement, as long as no reality TV is involved.

Oh, and because it wouldn't be Christmas without a sing-along (in my family at least), you also get this from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas - one of the best Christmas movies there ever was...
