Lykke Li - Breaking It Up
Turns out choosing an end of year top 3 is not that easy. Only 3? 2008 has been a year of new anthems, fresh sounds and all sorts of unimagined coolness. But it's safe to say that there are a few songs which have stood out for me for various reasons and, I reckon, will continue to stand out for years to come. And so begins my '08 countdown.
Let's start with a track from Lykke Li's album Youth Novels. The album was released in June, with this track Breaking It Up out 2 months later. I saw her perform live at Camden's Koko and she was amazing. Crazy. Mesmerising. This song captures all that, and mixes in a children's choir (5 points), clapping (10 points) and a big traffic cone loudspeaker thing (off the scale). Oddly, for a song all about a wrench of a break-up, it's rather uplifting in parts and I love the messy electro bit near the end.
The video is fabulous too, with our Swedish heroine stomping around some sort of minimalist warehouse apartment. In very sexy boots. Very cool indeed, and she's only 22. The song may be about a break up, but I have a feeling this is just the beginning for Lykke Li.
